The Lower East Side of Manhattan has become a hotbed of activity over the years, from trendy shops to both excellent and lousy restaurants and a hopping nightlife. Boulton and Watt is one of the excellent restaurants with an energetic, bustling, happy and professional crowd.  No matter where you may be in the city, if want to explore some new neighborhoods, make the Lower East Side (LES) and Boulton and Watt a first stop.

The Boulton and Watt Experience: Finally, bright sunshine and temperatures in the 50’s, a welcome relief after weeks of cold and snow. Everyone is out on this Saturday afternoon. I decide to walk the LES and remember the good things I’ve heard about Boulton and Watt and decide to check it out.

About 1:45 pm on a Saturday I walk in to find the place full and bustling, everyone is having a good time. I go to the bar looking for a seat, nothing available. Bartender immediately comes over to ask if I want to see a menu. I say that I was hoping to find a seat and eat and he says I’ll get you your drink, just wait here, there are two people ready to get up in a few minutes. Sure enough I was soon sitting down looking at the menu. The bartender is terrific, attentive and personable all afternoon while I am there, making this meal very enjoyable.

My seat is to the left of the long side of the bar directly in front of one of the two televisions with the Sochi Olympics on. The long side of the bar has about 12 seats with additional seats curving around the two shorter sides of the bar. The bright sunshine is streaming into the corner restaurant from the large windows on Avenue A, East 1st Street and Houston Street (pronounced “HOW”ston, not like the city in Texas). This is adding to the great vibe inside.

I’ve seen some online photos of the Chicken Pot Pie which was my intended first choice to order now that I finally got to come here. Unfortunately it was only going to be available at dinner. So I went to my backup choice, Macaroni and Cheese with Bacon. Now this dish was delicious, big on flavor, creamy with big chunks of bacon. Now I normally don’t take food pics to include here but this was so good I could not resist.

Business Travelers: Boulton and Watt is a great way to get out of the ho- hum of Midtown Manhattan and explore some of Manhattan’s neighborhoods.  This place is terrific for Business Travelers and anyone who wants to entertain clients, colleagues, friends or coworkers. The noise level might be a little higher than usual but certainly manageable. Crowd seemed professional on my visit. Not a place for a quiet dinner. Start here and leave yourself time to walk around and explore some of the small shops, bars and restaurants both new and old throughout the Lower East Side. The spot is centrally located putting you within an easy walk to other Manhattan neighborhoods like The BoweryLittle Italy, Soho and Greenwich Village.

Every review of Gotham Bar and Grill is glowing, everyone loves the place as do I. I was really looking forward to going back. Gotham deserves every one of those good reviews. The entire experience, from the welcome at the door to the service and food, is terrific. Go anytime for a wonderful time. Gotham offers a $25 prix fix lunch marketplace special. Yes, I am in Greenwich Village again, but having one of New York’s best restaurants so close to home made this trip quickly inevitable. NYC neighborhoods The Bowery, Meatpacking District and Flatiron are coming soon along with more Philly favorites.

The Gotham Bar and Grill Experience: OK, I cheated. It was the July 4th holiday week.  With the 4th on a Wednesday both weekends emptied the city so I go to Gotham on Friday, July 6, 2012 about 8:15 P.M. expecting lots of seats. Not quite, the restaurant is full and I snag one of the 3 remaining empty seats at the bar, a nice vibe for a holiday Friday night. The bar faces the wall and seems quite long with about 18 seats on the long side and 4 seats on each of the short sides. I sit about 2/3 of the way down the long end. Sit at the bar near the door for a good view of the entire restaurant. I order a drink and look at the menu.  I know you can’t go wrong with most items but the well-known classic Gotham Bar & Grill Tuna Tartare is calling my name (watch this video to learn the story and see how it is made coutesy Eater Untouchables). I order the Tartare with the Gotham Risotto, actually two appetizers, but both were absolutely terrific and plenty of food.

Once I order, the bartender snaps my dinner “tray” to the top of the bar and it is as if I now have a small table at the bar, very cool and comfortable. It also thankfully keeps my food off my shirt.  The bartender is nice, engaging and extremely professional. The other patrons are all in small groups at the bar so my conversations were limited but they all seemed friendly and were having a good time.

Business Travelers:  Gotham is expensive but worth the price.  Restaurant week for dinner or lunch presents a rare opportunity to get a good deal. Excellent for all types of business activities with friends, coworkers, clients and colleagues. The bar is not extremely social, most people have come with others and are already engaged so this is a good place to come alone to decompress or with others, interacting with other patrons only when you want. Of course the Greenwich Village neighborhood is a great walking area and Gotham is near some of the most beautiful blocks in The Village, or even the city, with the blocks of West 10th, 11th and 12th between 5th and 6th Avenues being the best. Also check out the scene in nearby Union Square. A perfect place for  Women traveling on business, you  will feel welcome and comfortable in Gotham and the surrounding neighborhood.

Excited to be back in NYC, move complete, and to introduce New York BarTaste reviews. There are still several Philly Reviews to deliver which you will see over the next several weeks sprinkled among the New York reviews. For my first NYC review I decided to use the opportunity to reacquaint myself with my old neighborhood, Greenwich Village. I chose a longtime neighborhood standard, Jack Bistro on University Place.

The Jack Bistro Experience: I walk into Jack on Monday June 25, 2012 about  9:00 P.M. The place has not changed much, the menu has become a simpler French inspired bar food selection. The place is not very crowded although it is a little later on Monday night. Jack offers a $20 three course dinner special, a nice surprise, and you can substitute a glass of wine for one course which I do. I order the Lamb Bolognaise, desert and a glass of wine, all for $20.  Food was very good and the price made it even better. Bar is on the smaller side in a corner with 4 seats on the short side and 6 on the longer side. The short side seats offer a view of the restaurant through the often open full length glass windows to the outdoor seating area and the busy sidewalk beyond. Of course a guy comes in, sits right next to me (why?) and reeks of cigarette smoke. I get the idea he is a regular and that I am next to his regular seat so avoid the third and fourth seats from the corner. One television in the corner showing the Mets who lost to the Cubs. Being a Phillies fan in NYC I was not sad. Bartender extremely engaging and friendly.

Business Travelers: No business people around this evening. Not the place you would normally travel to from other parts of the city if traveling on business but a great casual choice if you are in the Greenwich Village neighborhood. Especially appealing is the outdoor seating. I have seen several business people taking a break, eating lunch or people watching from the large number of outdoor tables in the afternoon and evening. Women traveling on business will feel welcome and comfortable in Jack and the surrounding neighborhood.
