Business Travelers: Do you recommend South Philly Bar & Grill for
South Philly Bar & Grill is all about location, you guessed it: South Philadelphia, next to the famous Geno’s and Pat’s cheesesteak palaces. SPBG is the quintessential Philadelphia sports bar and a great place to watch any Philly game with some of the most devoted fans anywhere. The area is swarming with tourists so beware. One of BarTaste’s Top 10 Places To Watch The Phillies.
There are other good sports bars closer to the Center City Business District, Convention Center and hotels (see Top 10 Places to watch the Phillies) so is it worth the trip? It certainly is if you are walking the nearby Italian Market, which is worth seeing. Go ahead and do the tourist cheesesteak thing, I prefer Pat’s over Geno’s but really recommend foregoing both in favor of Steve’s Prince of Steaks (the original on Bustleton Avenue). Remember, Cheese Wiz is for tourists, get provolone cheese.
The South Philly Bar & Grill Experience: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 about 6:30 P.M. I arrive with some friends primarily to watch the Phillies but the Sixers and Flyers are both in the playoffs and on tonight. It is a big night for Philly sports. Surprisingly, few people here now although it does fill up later but certainly never became crowded. There was some confusion about not being able to have all three games on at once but with some prodding from customers all three games were finally on. Center bar, my favorite, almost a triangle with about 5 seats and 3 seats on the two shorter sides and about 13 seats on each of the two longer sides. Televisions everywhere so pick your game then select a seat.
We order appetizers to be followed by sandwiches but they all come at once. Order separately if you don’t want them all together. The Onion Rings and Italian Sausage and Peppers were good. The sausage is made locally in the nearby Italian Market. Both the Phillies and Sixers win, making me happy.
Business Travelers: No business people around and if you are a woman business traveler I’m sure the very nice and friendly bartenders (sisters?) would make sure you were comfortable at the bar. Worth the trip from Center City if you are looking for a real Philly sports bar experience away from Center City, are visiting the Italian Market or are being touristy with cheesesteaks.
