Business Travelers: Do you recommend Shorty’s 9th Ave for
Out of Greenwich Village and headed to Midtown Manhattan. My destination is Shorty’s 9th Avenue in search of a Phillies game and a good cheesesteak. Back in New York for the past 3 months after a 3 year stint away in Philadelphia. I am missing a good, real cheesesteak while watching a Phillies game among like minded fans. Shorty’s has two locations, 9th Avenue and Madison Avenue. Don’t be afraid, Philly fans are actually nice and friendly to the competition and Shorty’s is not all about cheesesteaks, so head on over for a casual, fun, bar food place with televisions and sports in Midtown Manhattan.
The Shorty’s 9th Ave Experience: On a Thursday night about 8:15 P.M. I walk into Shorty’s 9th Avenue and sit at the bar and order a drink. Great beer selection but tonight I order a glass of wine. Not your typical sports bar kind of choice but I plan on eating big and don’t want to get filled up. The Phillies were on and I settle in for what will become a disappointing night for my team. The bartender gives me a menu and calls me “honey” making me feel like I am right back in Philly although she must not have been a day older than 22.
Shorty’s has a large selection of cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, hoagies and sandwiches with enough sides and salads to please everyone. I order my usual Pizza Steak with fried onions, steak, provolone, marinara and onions with a side of Yuengling Rings. Lots of onion for me tonight. All was terrific. Many credit the bread made with Philly water as being the key to a great cheesesteak and Shorty’s 9th Avenue has the bread shipped in from Philly every hour and bakes it onsite.
The bar is long and faces the wall and runs the length of the restaurant. About 5 seats on the short side near the door and about 15 on the long side. Televisions visible from everywhere.
Two German tourists came in and asked to have a local beer. The bartender recommended the Brooklyn Summer Ale and a Yuengling Lager. Yeungling is a favorite local Philly beer, delicious from the “Oldest Brewery in America.” Shorty’s uses Yuengling to batter the onion rings I ordered. Terrific recommendations. She also recommends the tourists select two different cheesesteaks and share. They were very happy with the beer and food.
Shorty’s also has a food truck traveling around the city. Follow them on twitter to get the daily location @shortysnyc. We will review the second Shorty’s location on Madison Avenue soon.
Business Travelers: Shorty’s 9th Avenue is a Philly joint in Manhattan but if no Phillies teams are on television the staff is so nice and friendly I’m sure they would change the channel to your favorite team. Not a rowdy place tonight and moderately full so it was a great night to hang and have a good meal and catch a game without riotous crowd you might expect at a sports bar. Comfortable noise level. I know the situation is very different when the Eagles are playing, even when they are losing badly, so timing is everything. A great place for a group of friends, co-workers, clients or colleagues. Good casual place especially if you are staying in the Midtown Manhattan area, including the Theater District and Time Square. Tired of hotel food? Shorty’s has a great delivery service whose delivery area includes many of the local hotels. A comfortable sports bar for women traveling on business. Stroll around and check out the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood shops and restaurants centered on 9th Avenue and of course the nearby Theater District and Times Square.
